Bal Harbor's history dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, when the waterfront was swampland that was filled in for development. The community was originally called "Bay Harbor" but was renamed "Bal Harbor" in 1946 to reflect both the coast and bay.
Bal Harbor was the first planned community in Florida to have underground utilities. Developers also set guidelines for residential and beachfront areas, including 200-foot oceanfront property and lots that cost between $6,500 and $20,000.
The Bal Harbor Shops opened in 1965 as an outdoor shopping center with luxury retail tenants. It was the first US location outside New York for both Oscar de la Rental and Yves Saint Laurent, and some say it was also the first mall to charge for parking.
